Androgenetic Alopecia

More commonly know as male pattern baldness and female pattern baldness, androgenetic alopecia is fairly common, affecting men and women alike. Men typically experience hairline recession at the temples and balding on the crown of head, while women normally have diffusely thin hair loss over the top of their scalp but do not normally experience a receding hairline. While the exact cause of hair loss has yet to be understood, androgenetic alopecia is a hereditary condition which can affect the age at which the hair loss occurs as well as the rate and extent of hair loss.

Hair Loss and Hormones

Regarding the exact (and again, not completely understood) reason for hair loss, the hormone DHT (dihydrotestosterone) appears to be at least partially to blame for the miniaturization of hair follicles in both men and women. DHT is thought to attach to androgen receptors on hair follicles and trigger the receptors to begin miniaturizing. The hair from miniaturized follicles becomes finer and finer and in time, the follicles may cease to produce any hair at all. A dermatologist can perform tests to determine if your follicles are still active.

Emotions and Help for Hair Loss

Losing you hair affects different people in different ways. Some men, and even a few women, have no problem shaving their heads and embracing baldness. But for many more, losing their hair can negatively impact their lives. Self-image, self-esteem and self-confidence can all be shaken. Our goal is to help our clients find hair loss solutions that works to make them feel like themselves again.
